The Upside is a light-hearted film that showcases the astonishing bond between a paralyzed man and his former-convict caretaker, played by Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart respectively.

The film is based on a true story and is an English remake of the film The Intouchables. Full of laughs and dramatic moments, The Upside never leaves a dull moment for its audience. This is simply because of the film’s unique main characters, Dell Scott (Hart) and Phillip Lacasse (Cranston). There aren’t really any problems with the film; the only thing that really comes to mind is the subplots that could have been drawn out more – but this doesn’t really bring down the quality of the film all that much.

Cranston and Hart‘s bromance felt heartwarming and real. While it is known that Cranston can flex between his comedy and dramatic roles, it’s refreshing to see Hart practice some of his dramatic abilities. The supporting cast was great as well. Nicole Kidman, Aja Naomi King, and Jahi Di’allo Winston felt right in their different roles and presented a charming presence when onscreen.

The most interesting part of this film is how much depth Cranston gives his character, Phillip. Cranston exhibits the right amount of gruff and heavy-hearted personality for his character, and it is entertaining to watch as the character progresses to be happier and more fun. Seeing how his character deals with his trauma and eventually overcoming that pain – thanks to Dell’s unlikely friendship.

Overall, The Upside has strong comedy and dramatic moments to become a fun and light-hearted film to watch. It has strong leads and an evolving story that allows the film to flourish creatively.
