Valencia College kicked off their 21st Annual Film Celebration, as community members, students and faculty have a chance to take in some short, and feature length films during the annual event.

Student Development and several local businesses, including Chapman/Leonard Studio Equipment, Gifn, Women In Film and Television Florida, Film Florida, and Longshot Pictures all sponsored the event.

“This is the first year we will show films that have been created as a result of a collaboration between the Digital Media Department and the Film Department at Valencia College,” director Colleen Cheney said.

Two short films were shown at the event, and one feature film. The short films were “Ellie” and “Incentive for the Incentive”. The featured film was called “Broads and Bombers, a War Time Experiment in Manpower.” Jon Anderson directed all of the films.

“Broads and Bombers, a War Time Experiment in Manpower” is a feature documentary about the Women Air Force  Service Pilots (WASP). These pilots were the first woman to fly military planes for the USA in World War II, but their program was unfortunately cut short.

After the “Broads and Bombers” screening, Jon Anderson, along with three of the WASP women, and the new program chair, Eric Fleming, sat down for a short Q&A where Anderson spoke briefly on what new changes are to come for his documentary.  The women also spoke of more stories during their time as pilots.

“Obviously the film celebration is a little bit different this year than years past because we have a new program chair, Eric Fleming, but other than that it won’t be too different,” Director of Media Relations, Kara Brown said. “Still lots of great films, food and friends”.

The event will continue for two more nights on Feb. 12-13.

All screenings begin promptly at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center located on Valencia’s east campus. For the public, tickets cost $10 for a Day Pass, and $25 for a Celebration Pass, which allows admission to all of the events. For Valencia students, faculty, senior citizens and members of the military, admission is $5 for a Day Pass, and $15 for a Celebration Pass.

All Proceeds from this event go to the current class of film students to produce their own short projects, which will be screened at next year’s celebration.
