UCF has confirmed that Johnny Dawkins will be the new head coach of the Knights men’s basketball program.

Dawkins will be the Knights’ seventh men’s head basketball coach and will be introduced at a press conference on Thursday at 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to attend the presser, with doors at CFE Arena opening at 10 a.m.

“I’m confident Johnny Dawkins will be a great leader for our men’s basketball program here at UCF,” said Athletic Director Danny White in a press release. “There was a ton of interest in this position. We targeted Coach Dawkins early on in the process. After our conversations with him and after talking to many well-respected people in college basketball, it became clear to me that he’s the right coach to take our program to the next level.”

The press release also included a quote from Dawkins regarding his new job.

“I’d like to thank President Hitt, Danny White and the entire administration for their belief, faith and confidence in me,” said Dawkins in the release. “This is a meaningful opportunity to build and grow a program that we can be proud of. I am honored to represent UCF, the community and the state of Florida.”

Danny White has named his second head coach since taking over as the Athletic Director at UCF and with this hire he brings in former Stanford men’s basketball head coach Johnny Dawkins to coach the Knights, according to ESPN and multiple reports.

Dawkins will take over the UCF men’s basketball program after Donnie Jones went 100-88 in his six season with the Knights, the program had 21 wins vacated during Jones’ first season on campus.

The Knights haven’t won more than 13 games since joining the American Athletic Conference in 2013 and with White at the helm the program expects to contend for a conference titles.

“Our athletics department, university and community expect our men’s basketball program to compete for American Athletic Conference titles and make regular postseason appearances, and unfortunately, we have not reached these expectations.” said White in a press release after Jones and UCF parted ways.

Dawkins has coached at Stanford for the last eight season after spending ten years working with legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as a part of his staff, including being a part of the 2001 National Championship team.

The former Duke guard is 156-115 all-time as a head coach but is coming off his first non-winning season since 2010-11. Dawkins most notably took Stanford to the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

As of this writing UCF is yet to make anything official, but if Dawkins is taking over the UCF men’s basketball program he sure does have a lot of young talent to build off of with both B.J. Taylor and Adonys Henriquez expected to return next season, as well as A.J. Davis.

The big question going into Dawkins tenure with the Knights will be if he can keep big man Tako Fall at UCF, it is unclear if Fall has any desire to transfer out but it is worth noting that Donnie Jones was an interracial part in bringing the 7-foot-6 center to Orlando.
