The Valencia College Humanities Speaker Series has arranged a musical performance of Argentinian duo Rosa Incaica, which includes vocalist Annelise Skovmand and guitarist Pablo Gonzalez Jazey. Rosa Incaica is dedicated to expressing and establishing cross-cultural understanding through music. The duo will be performing at Valencia East and West campuses February 5th and 6th beginning at 7:30 pm. Both nights are free to students and the public.
Ana J. Caldero Figueroa, the dean of Arts and Humanities at West Campus, gave some insight into the organization and creation of the event.
Who is Rosa Incaica and why have you chosen them to perform for Valencia students?
Figueroa: Rosa Incaica, a name alluding to the sacred stone of the Incas, is the confluence of the artistic work of Danish-American singer Annelise Skovmand – possessor of an expressive, unique vocal timbre – and Argentine guitarist Pablo González Jazey with his subtle style. Together, two decades ago, they began their quest to perform songs that speak to the soul and bring to life the stories behind the texts.
Rosa Incaica began as the Inca Rose Duo, undertaking the works of Argentinean classical composers Alberto Ginastera and Carlos Guastavino in their CD Flores Argentinas: “…a delicate and balanced lilt between the traditions of folk and art song,” as described by poet León Benarós. They have musically traveled a new path in the field of popular Argentinian folk music, exploring its own signature sound offering unique interpretations bringing out the beauty and drama of poetry, in an intimate artistic expression that has blended folk elements with other harmonies.
What do you hope students will take away from the performance and lecture?
We hope students have a wonderful out-of-the-classroom experience, as Rosa Incaica takes audiences on a musical journey through Argentina and Latin America with their unique interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk songs from the region.
Performing a fusion of classical chamber music with popular and ethnic traditions, Rosa Incaica combines the discipline and technique of the classical music world with the spirit and freedom of folk and popular music. For them, there is not just one genre of music, only quality music that hopefully touches student’s hearts.
What makes Rosa Incaica different from other music duos? How have they made a difference in your life?
I think their commitment to educating students all over the world makes them different. The duo also offers lecture-demonstrations and seminars on the music and poetry of Argentina and master classes for voice, guitar and chamber music. Rosa Incaica has delighted audiences in Argentina, Europe and the United States, presenting programs that celebrate the music from Argentina, including songs by classical composers Alberto Ginastera and Carlos Guastavino and popular music greats Astor Piazzolla, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Carlo Gardel, Fito Páez, “Cuchi” Leguizamón, and Eduardo Falú, as well as songs made famous by Mercedes Sosa, the voice of Latin America. They have shared the stage with Argentine folk and tango music greats and with symphonic orchestras in the US and Argentina.
