Writer-director James Gunn has been hired by Warner Bros and DC to write the next chapter of the Suicide Squad franchise. While he hasn’t been confirmed to direct the movie, the two entertainment companies have hinted towards boarding him.
In early 2018, Gunn was fired by Disney due to a series of offensive jokes on his Twitter page, some a decade old. The resurfaced tweets have made some people skeptical on his involvement in the franchise.
Here’s what some Valencia students had to say on the issue:
“I think the most important thing that a director or script writer needs is talent, and this is a world of free expression, he should be able to say whatever he wants and do whatever he wants – that’s his personal life. His professional life has nothing to do with it, everyone has a side like that,” says Fernando Lopez, 19-year-old business administration major.
25-year-old sociology major, Rodrigo Fuentes says, “He already created some great movies, his work says something so him giving bad tweets doesn’t mean his work is not fantastic. If he gets chosen to do Suicide Squad 2 it’s because of his previous work, he did Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2.”
Katherine Fossetta, 25-year-old interdisciplinary studies major responds “If he’s the director, it’s probably not gonna be the same, like the same humor that people are looking for. So to some extent he’s not gonna have total leeway of what’s in or out of the movie.”
Alex Argueta, 21-year-old general studies major says, “I’m gonna be honest, I say he should be a part of the movie…I feel like his character is a bit not normal, but he shows a lot of personality, like sure some stuff is pretty offensive, but you can tell it’s a joke and it’s how he is. So, seeing him direct a movie I think would be interesting to watch.”
“Okay so if we looked at the personal character of some of the great contributors to art and entertainment over the years, we could definitely find people who’ve done worse than these tweets. Do I feel like it’s offensive? Yeah, he probably knew what he was doing too. Does it change whether or not I’m going to go see this movie? No.” says John Rawls, 22-year-old paramedicine major.
