LIVE BLOG: UCF vs FIU (season opener)

Justin Holman will start his first-ever season opener for UCF when they take on FIU Thursday night.

UCF open up the 2015 season against FIU on Thursday night at Bright House Networks Stadium.

Justin Holman and William Stanback lead the Knights offense against an FIU secondary that features two seniors who return from last season.

UCF beat writer Danny Morales will be providing live updates from Bright House Networks Stadium throughout the game.

7:52 – FIU will be forced to punt on 4th and 6. UCF will get the ball back trailing 15-14 with 7:43 remaining.

8:11 – UCF has FIU at 3rd and 6. The Knights need a stop here to get the ball back.

10:10 – UCF is forced to punt again down 15-14 to FIU. The Panthers start the drive from their own 20.

11:39 – Holman connects with Smith again for another first down, UCF now in FIU territory.

12:32 – Holman hits Smith with a rocket for a first down. Knights ball at their 44-yard line.

12:52 – McGough’s pass is tipped and then lands in the hands of Ya’keem Griner for a touchdown, FIU goes for two and fail. Panthers lead 15-14.

14:47 – FIU gets back-to-back pass plays and the Panthers are in the red zone. 1st and goal at the 6.

4th Quarter:

0:23 – UCF goes for it on 4th and 1 with a QB sneak and he’s short. The Knights turn it over on downs.

1:47 UCF face 3rd and 3 from the FIU 22-yard line. The Knights are looking to make this a two score game.

2:55 – Holman hits Tre’Quan Smith for a first down. Knights ball on the FIU 29.

3:03 – Holman throws into triple coverage but Akins can’t make the catch in coverage.

5:54 – FIU is forced to punt and UCF will get the ball back with a 14-9 lead.

6:33 – McGough throws a screen and FIU gets a first down. Panthers ball at their 33-yard line.

6:50 – UCF goes three-and-out and will be forced to punt after the defense was just on the field for a 7-minute drive.

8:37 – UCF starts the drive from their own 21-yard line as they lead over FIU 14-9.

8:41 – Alex Gardner runs it in for a touchdown and FIU cuts UCF’s lead to 14-9 after a failed two-point conversion.

10:02 – McGough throws for a first down and FIU has first and goal from the 3.

14:52 – FIU returns the kickoff to the 18 and the second half is underway.

3rd Quarter:

0:01 – FIU tries for a 50-yard field goal and it is short. UCF takes a 14-3 lead into halftime.

2:27 – FIU will start the drive from their own 10-yard line. UCF has been pinning the Panthers back in their own side of the field all game long.

5:00 – FIU is forced to punt and UCF will start the drive at their own 42-yard line after Akins fields the punt.

6:24 – UCF goes three-and-out and are forced to punt. Houston’s punt is caught at the 8-yard line.

8:23 – UCF starts their drive at the 35-yard with a 14-3 lead.

9:58 – FIU returns the kickoff to the 25-yard line to start the drive.

10:07 – Holman hits Akins for his second touchdown of the game, UCF now leads 14-3. Holman has 85 yards and two touchdowns passing while going 8-10.

11:44 – Holman completes a couple of nice passes and UCF is on the FIU 36.

13:44 – FIU punts after the first down is overturned. UCF will start the drive from their 30-yard line leading 7-3.

2nd Quarter:

0:00 – UCF tackles FIU behind the line and the Panthers will now face 2nd and 10.

0:16 — Holman hits Jordan Akins for a 7-yard touchdown pass and UCF takes a 7-3 lead just before the end of the first quarter. That was Akins first career touchdown reception for the Knights.

2:52 – FIU fumbles the ball and UCF recovers it at the 26.

3:49 – Justin Holman can’t complete the pass on third down and UCF will be forced to punt again. Houston’s punt is downed at the FIU 5-yard line.

5:24 – Wilson rushes for a first down and UCF moves the chains for the first time today.

6:04 – UCF will start the drive with the ball on their 30-yard line. The Knights went three-and-out on their last drive.

6:10 – FIU makes a 28-yard field goal and the Panthers take a 3-0 lead.

7:41 – Alex Gardner catches a screen in the back field and takes it to the UCF 14-yard line for a first down.

8:49 – Alex McGough rolls out of the pocket and completes a first down pass to keep the drive going.

10:49 – FIU converts on 3rd and 4 to get a first down and keep their opening drive going.

13:33 – Caleb Houston’s punt pins FIU on their 13-yard line. FIU ball.

13:41 – Holman’s pass is nearly intercepted and UCF will be forced to punt.

Dontravious Wilson returns the kickoff to the 37-yard line to start the 2015 season.
