Super Bowl LIX is officially here and the defending champions, Kansas City Chiefs, are looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Vince Lombardi trophies.
Blocking their path to a threepeat is a rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. These two teams faced off two years ago in Super Bowl LVII, with the Chiefs taking the win, 38-35, after a game-winning field goal.
This year, the Philadelphia Eagles have a new face on their team who they hope can help bring the title to the ‘City of Brotherly Love.’ That man is the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, Saquon Barkley, the ninth player in NFL history to reach over 2,000 rushing yards in a single season.
Averaging 148.3 yards per game in the postseason, Barkley will definitely have the Chiefs working overtime to stop him.
“I think the Eagles have a chance this year. I heard the Eagles running back [Saquon Barkley] has been pretty good all year, so I think he can help them win the game. I would also like for someone else to win; I’m tired of seeing the Chiefs winning every year,” Vania Zarak, 20, Valencia Accounting major said.
After conducting an informal poll of Valencia students (41 respondents) as to who they favored to win the game, it was almost an even 50/50 split. Twenty people, or 49%, chose the reigning champions Kansas City as the potential favorite to win. Meanwhile the remaining 21 students, or 51%, picked the underdog Philadelphia Eagles to win this year’s game.
“I am picking the Eagles because I am tired of seeing the Chiefs win. Also, I really like the city of Philadelphia,” Belen Gonzalez, 18, Valencia Psychology major, said.
Some respondents said they were tiring of the Chiefs mini dynasty and would prefer a new champion. Some said that the Chiefs do not even deserve to be in the big game calling them the “worst 15-1 team in history.”
Others are siding with Kansas City because of their experience adding that the Chiefs have proven that they show up and will do everything to win.
“Knowing how the Chiefs have performed before, I am confident they are going to win again. Even though a change of pace would be nice, I know the Chiefs will most likely win again,” Antoni Cuenca, 18, Valencia Marketing major said when asked on who he is picking to hoist the Lombardi trophy.
Only time will tell who was right after all. For more information on where to watch the Super Bowl, check local listings.
