On September 25, students with diverse Latin backgrounds came together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month before Hurricane Helene closed the campuses for severe weather.
Valencia College’s East Campus Fiesta de Musica kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month. Students and staff had the chance to jam out to some Latin music, explore club tables, and grab some empanadas, cheesy tequeños and quesitos con guava from Mecato’s Bakery & Cafe at the event.
Natalie Munoz, 30, Business organizational management program, was staffing the International Student Services table. The International Student Service caters to all of the international students at Valencia College. “We are the go-to office for all international students in regard to their status, immigration visas, and advising,” Munoz said. The International Students Services table reassured the students that they have access to on-site advisors just for them.
Melissa Schreiber, Professor of Biology, was at the Study Abroad and Global Experience table. Students will be able to study abroad in the Galapagos Islands next to Ecuador next year from May 30 to June 8, 2025. Students will learn about Charles Darwin’s theory, natural selection, and the diversity of animal and plant species.
“Anyone can go!” Professor Schreiber stated.
Applications for this event close December 6, 2024. Contact [email protected] for more information or application details.
Angely Lugo, 25, Medical Assisting Program, staffed the Library Resources table and was spreading the word that the library is there to help. Students are more than welcome to check out textbooks, study rooms or stop by the circulation desk for a specific book.
The Valencia College Library is now offering Book Pen Pals. Just simply scan one of the QR codes in the library, it will pair you with a random student to chat with. “You can recommend good books to each other and then meet up at the end of November,” Lugo explained, “There is a Canvas course to connect with students as well.”
Students can visit the Library at East Campus Building 4, 2nd floor for more information.
Students also had the opportunity to check their voter registration by scanning the Orange County Supervisor of Elections QR code provided at the faculty voter table. Early voting in Orange County is from October 21 through November 3. Check the Orange Country Supervisor of Elections website for locations. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
