Kathleen Plinske, President of the Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana campuses of Valencia College is searching for a qualified Valencia student to shadow her on April 12th as part of the President For a Day contest.
According to Plinske, the winning student will accompany her at all the meetings and functions she will attend, and debrief after each one. This student will also receive a $500 Valencia Foundation Scholarship for the Summer or Fall 2019 term, a letter of recommendation, a leather-style padfolio, an interview survival kit, and a free lunch to celebrate.
“From my perspective, the purpose of the contest is to help student leaders learn about the leadership structure at Valencia,” said Plinske. “How decisions are made at the college and to help me, as Campus President, better understand the students’ experience and learn about students’ concerns and suggestions for the campus and the college.”
33 students have applied, and 17 of those students were selected for group interviews. After that, 8 will move on to the virtual interview. Margaux Pratt, Coordinator of Career Development at Osceola Campus, is in charge of selecting the one student for this experience. According to Pratt, she is looking for a student with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of college’s policies and procedures.
- Willingness to learn about career development, leadership, and communication.
- Enthusiasm for Valencia College.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse community.
Final interviews will take place on March 22nd, and the contest hopes to announce a winner by March 25th.
