UCF’s American Sign Language (ASL) Club will host Dirty Sign Night on March 30 at 7p.m. in room 108 of the Psychology building at UCF. Deaf and hearing students alike can come out and learn all of the inappropriate signs that their professors don’t want to teach them.

Josh Prado, who is deaf, came up with the idea and hosts every Dirty ASL event; he’s been doing it for four or five years now. The signs Prado teaches are not exclusive to words found in the dictionary. He also teaches the signs for slang, sexual phrases, and curse words.

“This event is for no other purpose than just to get to together and chat, laugh, and enjoy being around each other,” says Debbie Drobney, the main coordinator of the Sign Language Interpretation Program at Valencia College East Campus.

The ASL Interpretation program at Valencia plans many silent events and activities for deaf and hearing students to come together and practice their ASL in a fun social environment. There are events such as silent game night, silent bowling, and silent happy hour.

“Be sure to get to the event early. Don’t be on deaf time,” jokes Drobney, referring to the the amount of time it takes for deaf people to leave somewhere because they have to tell their friends goodbye by signing them sentences, which take a long time.
