Orlando City earn another point, draw against Riverhounds
March 29, 2014
Ties may be a usual occurrence in soccer, but for Orlando City SC their 1-1 draw to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports was not what the future MLS club was looking for.
Orlando City had plenty of opportunities early in the first half, but the Lions couldn’t capitalize and get the ball in the back of the net. Orlando would go on to outshoot Pittsburgh 5-3 during the first 45 minutes.
“I don’t think we’ll have more balls in the box in the final third at any stage in the season than we’ve had this evening, and we’ve got to do better.” said Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath.
Jose Angulo put Pittsburgh on the scoreboard first when he scored in the 50th minute after getting behind the Orlando City defense and dribbling past goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo, before burying the ball in the back of the net to give the RIverhounds a 1-0 lead.
Luke Boden tied the game at 1-1 for Orlando City when he scored on a strike from just inside the 18-yard box in the 58th minute of play.
“We should have won the game, we should have won the game comfortably,” said Boden after the game. “It shouldn’t have been 1-1, it should have been 6, 7-1.”
The Lions had multiple chances to win the game during the final 15 minutes of play, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Orlando finished the game with 18 total shots, five of which came from forward Corey Hertzog.
With the tie Orlando City’s record goes to 0-0-2 for the season.
“The goals will come, the goals will definitely come,” said Boden. ” We’ve got great players, great players, so the goals will definitely come.”
Orlando will now prepare for an exhibition game with the University of South Florida Bulls on Tuesday, April 1 at Colbert Stadium on the USF campus. Kick-off against USF is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Lions next USL Pro game will be on Saturday, April 5 at home against the Rochester Rhinos.
