MAITLAND Fla. — The Orlando Solar Bears began the first day of their October opening practice by welcoming public attendance at the RDV Sportsplex Wednesday morning.
The Solar Bears return from a 10-year hiatus, and look to begin the season with winning energy.
“I think we have a good nucleus of older players, like Ryan Gruthers,” said head coach Drake Berehowsky on veteran players that can carry the team during the season. “If you have a core group, then you should be fine for the rest of the year.”
When preseason begins Friday, Oct. 5, Orlando will showcase their new look as they visit the Germain Arena in Estero, Fla. to face off against the Florida EverBlades.
“My expectation this season is a championship,” said Berehowsky. “I wouldn’t be in it for any other reason. I want to develop these guys, I want them to improve as players.
“If you can develop these guys, you can develop as a team.”
The inaugural season hinges on the importance of returning professional hockey to the City of Orlando. The team intends on building chemistry amongst the players, which is a key need according to Berehowsky.
The first opportunity to see the Solar Bears in action at home will be on Oct. 20 when the Florida EverBlades visit the Amway Center.
